HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE COMPONENT DESCRIPTION
The major components of a data collection system are described
below:
INSTANT DATA software is the hub of all data collection activity.
It manages the process of data collection and also facilitates
dissemination of information. Listed below are some of the key
features of the INSTANT DATA system:
o Extremely flexible, thus allows rapid customization
o User definable data and transactions
o User definable on-line edits and validation
o On-line report generation
o Menu driven
o Multi-user system design
o Multi-hardware vendor co-existence
The flexible design of the INSTANT DATA software allows
transactions to be added and/or modified easily as required. This
eliminates the pressure of having to design the entire system
prior to the pilot implementation for fear of having forgotten an
element that may be critical at a later time. The element can
easily be incorporated into the INSTANT DATA system either during
the pilot implementation or upon completion. This flexibility
also facilitates continued growth of your bar code system into
other areas of your process.
System computer
INSTANT DATA operates on the Pentium systems , mini computer such
as IBM RS6000 Microvax . and mainframes such as IBM 4300, 3090
VAX 8513 etc. This computer is also utilized to download
instructions to the readers and upload collected data to the host
system.
Controller/multi port adapter
These device are capable of supporting from 16 up to 140
individual reader stations. Multiple multi-port can be attached
to INSTANT DATA system
Readers/ Data Entry Devices
Readers can be programmable and equipped with an LCD display.
They can prompt, collect, edit, and transmit completed
transactions to the CPU via the multi-port collector. Portable
Readers can be hand-held , programmable with LCD display, an
alphanumeric keyboard, and RS-232/RJ-11 connections.
Scanners
o Laser scanners are gun shaped devices, used in a portable mode
to scan data without touching the read label .
o Wand scanners are pen shaped devices that pass over and touches
the read object.
o Slot scanner reads bar codes or magnetic data as it is passed
through the slot in the reader.
Printers
o Thermal printers use the heat process to print the labels or
documents. Due to the process, the labels can fade if they have
contact with bright light, sunlight, or heat. This printer option
is very cost effective if the document/label you are printing
requires a limited lifetime for readability.
o Thermal transfer printers print bar coded information and human
readable information on various size labels. The print on the
labels is extremely high quality, and is not effected by
environmental conditions. The printers are programmable, and
capable of holding multiple label formats at one time.
o Laser printers are capable of printing high quality documents
and labels (can be single sheet feed or continuous form on 8
1/2" X 11" sheets). The bar coded fields are easily
read by any type of wand or scanner.
o Dot matrix printers are useful for report printing, and for
some barcode labels if resolution is not a consideration, or if
large bar code are required .
o Impact printers are used to print labels that are extremely
small, such as PCB labels, or that require lamination and
environmental protection, such as wave solder and chemicals.
PILOT SYSTEM INVESTMENT
Many companies know that dollars can be saved by having instant
data available for managers to make better decisions. They also
know that operator time is being spent recording information
manually and then entering the same data again into a computer
terminal in some cases many days later and with errors. Annual
inventories cause production shut downs with losses in production
hours. These are some of the areas that companies know that data
collection would improve their company performance but are
waiting for a better time to install a complete system or have
implemented a project team to review data collections and select
the best system.
Even after the expense of reviewing and justifying a data
collection system, companies still hesitate to implement a system
because they don't fully believe that the system will work in
their facility or because of the high initial investment
required. Today systems can start for as little as $4900. and can
be installed in days. IDS provides for a 30 day
complete money back guarantee
With this offer, How long can you wait before installing a data
collection system and start get the benefits from it and how much
will it cost you to establish a project team to investigated data
collection systems and benefits.
Now you can prove it to yourself that data collection will work
in your company. Guaranteed. Start getting the benefits Instantly
